Alright. As the song says, "The highway is my legacy, on the highway I will run."
I seem to continue to be on the road quite a bit lately. Looks like I'll continue to do so for most of the summer. The previous Hillerman novel featuring Officer Chee and Lt. Leaphorn of the Navaho Tribal Police force so intrigued me and I enjoyed the audio novel so much that I decided to go to a local book store and see what I could find. Leaping off the bookshelf at me was Hillerman's 1996 sequel The Fallen Man.
Read by Gil Silverbird, The Fallen Man continues to tell the story of the adventures of Lt. Joe LeapHorn and Officer Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police. Only this time, Leaphorn is retired and Chee is the acting Lieutenant.
The skeletal remains of a body has been found atop a mountain in Navaho country. A cattle rustler is loose on the Navaho reservation. How are the two intertwined?
As before, Hillerman does and excellent job of intermixing his story with facts about the Navajo culture. Silverbird also does a fantastic job of helping you actually hear the various voices of the characters as the story progresses. Four cassette tapes with just over thirty-six minutes per side on each tape, it took most of about six hours traveling Missouri small highways to listen to the tale.
As before, I really enjoyed this audio book and plan on listening to more in the future. I have become a fan of Hillerman's Navaho mysteries and plan on looking for more, both in print and on tape. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery and the audio version to anyone who is traveling and looking for a good way to help pass the time.
